###The Morning Rush at the Train Depot
The Glacial Discovery Train was scheduled to depart at 9:45 AM, so I arrived around 9:15 AM, thinking I was giving myself plenty of time. The depot, however, was already packed with travelers, and something felt off. As murmurs circulated, we quickly learned that there had been a wreck on the tracks. The entire line was shut down until 1:00 PM.
Needless to say, confusion followed.
###A Lack of Coordination and Clear Communication
What stood out most wasn’t just the delay—it was the lack of communication and direction. There was no clear signage or staff directing us where to go. I ended up in the wrong line for check-in, unsure what the next steps were.
Thankfully, I had struck up a conversation with some kind strangers from Georgia who saved my spot in the correct line while I shuffled around trying to figure things out. It’s little moments of human kindness that make stressful situations a bit more bearable.
###The Silver Lining: Luggage Assistance
One thing that did go smoothly? The luggage handling. Staff at the depot collected my bags and promised they’d be delivered directly to my room on the cruise ship. Fingers crossed, but it was a welcome relief amid the chaos.
###Alaska Tour & Travel: A Missed Opportunity
I booked my train transfer through Alaska Tour & Travel, and unfortunately, I received no communication from them about the cancellation or delays. It felt like a missed opportunity to reassure or guide their customers.
Additionally, their instructions were unclear—they didn’t mention that you need to go inside the station to check in and get a boarding pass. Another small but significant detail that caused confusion.
###Plan B: The Motor Coach Ride to Whittier
Since the train wasn’t going anywhere, motor coaches were called in to transport passengers to Whittier. Around 10:30 AM, we started boarding the buses—but again, there was no organized system. It was basically first come, first serve boarding, and it was every traveler for themselves.
Despite the disorganization, I have to give credit where it’s due: our motor coach driver was fantastic. He offered fun commentary along the route, mixing in history, humor, and local insight that made the drive enjoyable.
###Final Thoughts
While this wasn’t the scenic train ride I had envisioned, it certainly became its own kind of adventure. Between miscommunications, unexpected detours, and kind strangers, the day was unpredictable—but not without its silver linings.
If you’re planning to take the Glacial Discovery Train, I highly recommend double-checking instructions, arriving early, and packing a bit of extra patience—just in case the tracks take a turn you didn’t expect.
