Key West, Florida, is one of those rare gems in the United States that feels like a tropical paradise. With its stunning sunsets, beautiful beaches, and vibrant culture, it’s the perfect destination for a getaway. Having visited this unique island, I want to share my thoughts on its suitability for different types of trips: solo, family, friends, and couples.
Overall Rating (based on trip type):
– Solo Trip: ⭐⭐⭐
– Family Trip (with young children): ⭐⭐
– Family Trip (with teenagers): ⭐⭐⭐
– Friend Trip: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
– Couples Trip: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Vibe: A Blend of Relaxation & Energy
Key West boasts a lively atmosphere, especially around Duval Street, where you’ll find a mix of bars, restaurants, and shops. The culture here is rich and diverse, heavily influenced by its history as a melting pot of different communities, including a strong and welcoming LGBTQ+ presence. This inclusivity adds to the island’s vibrant character, making it a beloved destination for all types of travelers. The laid-back vibe is infectious, encouraging you to slow down and soak in the beauty around you.
While the vibrant nightlife and upbeat energy make it a fantastic spot for couples and friends, families with young children may find it a bit overwhelming. The lively bars and nightlife might not be the best fit for little ones, but older kids and teenagers will likely enjoy the lively atmosphere and activities available.
Getting to Key West
One important thing to note about traveling to Key West is that, as an island, it can be a bit tricky to get to. There aren’t many direct flights available, especially if you’re a loyal Southwest Airlines traveler like I am. Unfortunately, Southwest doesn’t fly to Key West, which means I had to explore other options for my upcoming trips.
Most other major airlines do offer flights to Key West, including United and American Airlines, which often have direct flights available. If you’re someone who typically flies Southwest for its family-friendly policies, you might find this to be a downside. However, for couples or friends traveling, the other airlines can provide flexibility and convenience.
Beach and Water Conditions
One of the main draws of Key West is its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. The water clarity is generally excellent, allowing for spectacular snorkeling and diving experiences. When you’re in the water, you’ll likely find visibility ranges from 30 to 100 feet, depending on weather conditions and time of year.
The sand on Key West’s beaches is soft and powdery, making it a pleasant spot to relax or play. However, it’s important to be aware of seasonal seaweed issues. The sargassum seaweed can sometimes wash up on the beaches, particularly during the summer months from May to October. While it can create some challenges for beachgoers, local cleanup efforts are generally effective, and many resorts work hard to keep the beaches clean and inviting.
There aren’t many beaches here. Smathers being the main one. There are several hotels and resorts with their own private beach access however. I stayed at The Reach Key West at the South end of Duval Street, and they had their own private beach.
Hurricane Cleanup & Restoration
Key West has weathered its share of hurricanes, with the most recent storms prompting extensive cleanup and restoration efforts. After hurricanes, the local community comes together to restore the island’s charm and beauty, ensuring that the beaches and attractions are ready for visitors. The resilience of the island is impressive, and many areas bounce back quickly, maintaining the welcoming atmosphere that Key West is known for.
We were just there in November 2025, and everything was in beautiful condition.
Activities and Highlights
When my husband and I visited Key West for our honeymoon (yes, it’s been a minute!), we stayed at the Reach Key West by Hilton, a lovely little resort that features its own private section of beach. It was fantastic! You could snorkel right off that beach, and while there may not have been a ton of things to see, it was still a great spot for snorkeling and sea fishing. The resort was conveniently located so we could bike around to different restaurants, Duval Street, and other attractions.
Here are some highlights that would appeal to different types of travelers:
– Snorkeling Adventures: The crystal-clear waters surrounding Key West are perfect for snorkeling. We went on an unforgettable snorkeling trip, where we swam with vibrant marine life and explored stunning coral reefs. This is a great activity for couples or friends seeking adventure!
– Beach Cruising: One of the best ways to explore the island is by bike. We rented beach cruisers and rode around town, which was not only fun but also a convenient way to see the sights without the hassle of a car. Families with older children can enjoy this too, but be sure to keep an eye on little ones if you go biking!
– Dining at Better Than Sex: A must-visit for couples is the dessert restaurant “Better Than Sex.” The unique ambiance adds to the experience—it’s dimly lit, and you read the menu by flashlight. The playful, risqué names of the desserts add a fun touch, and I can assure you, the desserts are absolutely delicious! This place is perfect for a romantic evening out.
Cultural Immersion
Key West’s culture is vibrant and eclectic. The island’s history as a former pirate haven, a haven for artists, and a melting pot of different cultures is reflected in its architecture, food, and local traditions. The strong LGBTQ+ community adds a layer of diversity and acceptance, making it a welcoming place for everyone. From the colorful conch houses to the lively street performers, there’s a sense of creativity and freedom that permeates the island.
You can experience this culture through local events, art galleries, and even the famous sunset celebration at Mallory Square, where locals and tourists gather to watch the sun dip below the horizon while enjoying live music and street performances.
